Teaching vocational pupils in their pyjamas: a socio-material perspective on challenges in the age of Covid-19

Purpose Due to the global outbreak of Covid-19, Swedish teachers in upper secondary education were forced conduct emergency remote teaching. As today, there is a stream research that addresses digitalization light pandemic. Previous studies show challenges with sudden intensification have been particularly challenging practical and aesthetic subjects. The question as follows: What did vocational experience during teaching caused by Covid-19 what emergent tactics can be identified practice? Design/methodology/approach empirical data consists (1) interviews two and, (2) workshops 25 teacher students from different programmes addressed crisis. Findings Emergency meant due changed socio-material environment cannot easily transformed setting. related authentic situations material, problem solving dexterity. Tactics emerged response mainly connected attempts mimic practices. Originality/value Contributions include explaining specific possibilities developing competence when digitalised. Furthermore, it increases understanding relationship between theory practice education. By adopting perspective on competence, authors enhance importance shared environment.
